REPORTS TO:                     Principal and/or his/her designee

 

JOB GOALS:                       To help students overcome problems that impede learning and to assist them in making educational, occupational, and life plans that hold promise for their personal fulfillment as mature and responsible men and women.

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

1. Assists students in evaluating their aptitudes and abilities through the interpretation of individual standardized test scores and other pertinent data, and work with students in evolving education and occupation options in terms of such evaluation at the appropriate building level.

 

2.  Remains readily available to students so as to provide counseling that will lead each student to increased personal growth, self-understanding, and maturity.

 

3.  Takes an active role in interpreting the school’s objectives to students, parents, and the community at large.

 

4.  Works with teachers and other staff members to familiarize them with the general range of services offered to the student through counseling services.

 

5.  Supervises the preparation and processing of college, scholarship, and employment applications at the appropriate level.

 

6.  Maintains and interprets all records in the cumulative record folders to include Child Study Team evaluations, test data, and other student information as prescribed by School Board Policy.

 

7.  Assists in identifying pupils with special needs and maintains a close working relationship in referrals to other specialists in pupil personnel services.

 

8.  Attends and participates in faculty meetings, guidance counselor meetings, and fulfills required duties.  Also attends workshops outside of school to gain knowledge that will aid in counseling.

 

9.  Cooperates in the development of a working relationship with all members of the faculty and other members of the school community.

 

10. Registers students new to the school during the year and orients them to school procedures and the school’s varied opportunities for learning, and tests, if necessary, for BSI placement; contacts school districts for records.

 

11. Conducts two or more scheduled interviews with each student assigned by meeting individually or in small groups and remains readily available for further counseling at student’s request.  Counsels student in personal growth, self-understanding, and maturity.

 

12. Maintains a level of professional competence appropriate to the specific area of certification, assignment, and matters of general educational importance.

 

13. Coordinator of SAC/504 Committee.  Runs meetings, makes schedules and takes minutes at each meeting held twice a month.

 

14.  Coordinator with outside agencies (DYFS, SODAT, HealthCare Commons, Law Guardian, etc.) to aid students.

 

15.  Coordinates the Academic Watch program for students who are failing.

 

16.  Coordinator of standardized testing given to each grade level in the spring.

 

17.  Assists principal with discipline.

 

18.  Acts as a facilitator between teacher and students and sits in on parent conferences when necessary or requested.

 

19.  Performs other related professional duties as required and/or that are appropriate to the specific building assigned.

 

EVALUATION:

 

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel.
